Developments in the balance of travel services: December 2017
|
Balance of travel services Based on provisional data, in December 2017 the balance of travel services showed a surplus of €11 million, down 76.3% from a surplus of €45 million in December 2016. This development is attributed to a 26.5% increase in travel payments (December 2017: €172 million, December 2016: €136 million), which outweighed an increase of 0.8% in travel receipts (December 2017: €182 million, December 2016: €181 million). The rise in travel receipts reflected a 1.0% increase in average expenditure per trip, as inbound traveller flows decreased by 0.3%. Net receipts from travel services accounted for 2.4% of total net receipts from services and offset 0.7% of the goods deficit. In 2017, the balance of travel services showed a surplus of €12,680 million, up 13.2% from a surplus of €11,201 million in 2016. This development was driven by an increase of €1,389 million or 10.5% in travel receipts and a decrease of €90 million or 4.5% in travel payments. The rise in travel receipts is attributed mostly to a 9.7% increase in inbound traveller flows and, to a lesser extent, to a 1.4% rise in average expenditure per trip. Net receipts from travel services offset 69.1% of the goods deficit and accounted for 72.9% of total net receipts from services. Travel receipts In December 2017, as mentioned previously, travel receipts rose by 0.8% year-on-year. In more detail, receipts from residents of the EU28 fell by 5.4% to €96 million, whereas receipts from outside the EU28 rose by 8.8% (December 2017: €84 million, December 2016: €77 million). The lower receipts from within the EU28 were due to a 9.2% drop in receipts from euro area residents (December 2017: €58 million, December 2016: €64 million), as receipts from residents of non-euro area EU28 countries increased by 1.3%. Breaking down receipts by visitor’s country of origin, receipts from France remained roughly stable at €4 million, whereas receipts from Germany decreased by 19.2% to €14 million. Receipts from the United Kingdom increased by 7.8% to €17 million. Turning to non-EU28 countries, receipts from Russia fell by 31.4% to €4 million, as did receipts from the United States, by 19.5% to €12 million. In 2017, travel receipts rose by 10.5%, compared with the previous year, to €14,596 million. This development is attributed to increases in receipts from within the EU28 by 13.8% to €9,843 million and in receipts from outside the EU28 by 5.6% to €4,327 million. In particular, receipts from euro area residents rose by 20.6% to €6,270 million, while receipts from residents of non-euro area EU28 countries also increased, by 3.6% to €3,573 million. Specifically, receipts from France rose by 17.3% to €992 million, as did receipts from Germany, by 31.5% to €2,553 million. Specifically, visitor flows through airports increased by 3.5%, whereas visitor flows through road border-crossing points declined by 7.4%. This development is attributed to a 10.1% decrease in visitor flows from within the EU28, as visitor flows from outside the EU28 increased by 14.0%. In greater detail, the number of visitors from the euro area fell by 6.2% to 142 thousand, while visitors from the non-euro area EU28 countries also declined, by 13.2% (December 2017: 159 thousand, December 2016: 183 thousand). European Parliament approach on access to in-vehicle data welcomed
Insurance Europe has welcomed the result of yesterday’s vote in the European Parliament's Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) on the draft report on a European strategy for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS).
The draft report calls on the European Commission to take legislative action on access to in-vehicle data and resources before the end of 2018, enabling service providers to offer their products to drivers inside the vehicle, free from any interference by vehicle manufacturers.
Nicolas Jeanmart, head of personal insurance, general insurance & macroeconomics at Insurance Europe, commented: “Insurance Europe shares the view that the lack of decisive and concrete action at EU level on access to in-vehicle data is one of the major factors preventing a successful deployment of C-ITS technologies and in attaining their full potential. It also limits the competition in the market for vehicle data-based services and in turn the opportunities for consumers to benefit from a full range of vehicle-based services and service providers. Such legislative action is necessary to ensure consumers really get to decide who has access to their vehicle data and for what purpose.”
These messages are also reflected in the #Data4Drivers campaign, which Insurance Europe supports.

Healthcare RCM Outsourcing Market in the US - Improvement in Healthcare Administrative Processes to Boost Growth | Technavio
Technavio has published a new market research report on the healthcare RCM outsourcing market in the US from 2018-2022. (Graphic: Business Wire)
Technavio market research analysts forecast the healthcare RCM outsourcing market in the US to grow at a CAGR of around 13% during the period 2018-2022, according to their latest report.
This market research report segments the healthcare RCM outsourcing market in the US based on the type of service that includes back-end services, middle services, and front-end services. The front-end service generally includes patient facing and pre-intervention activities such as appointment scheduling, eligibility verification, insurance cover, and patient admission. This service is essential as the efficient delivery of reimbursement is directly dependent on the accuracy of patient data.
In this report, Technavio analysts highlight the improvement in healthcare administrative processes as a key factor contributing to the growth of the healthcare RCM outsourcing market in the US:
Improvement in healthcare administrative processes
The major driver for the healthcare RCM outsourcing market in the US is the improvement in healthcare administrative processes, optimization, and operational efficiency. Manual processes lead to data redundancies and errors, creating a complex and inefficient system. This results in healthcare providers facing problems in vital processes such as contracts management, denials management, billing, claims management and value-based reimbursement. This increases the overall costs associated with operations and payment models.
There is a growing need and demand for processes and solutions, which can result in fast and error-free billing cycles, driving productivity and cost optimization for an enterprise. As the patient experience is increasingly becoming the top-priority for the healthcare sector, there is a rising demand for efficient bill reimbursements, appointment scheduling, claims processing, and minimizing medical billing errors. An RCM service provides the needed operational efficiency. An RCM solution improves the healthcare administrative processes pertaining to RCM by intelligently managing the critical processes such as collections, coding, reimbursement, denials management, contract management, customer service, patient billing, advisory, and follow-up.
Also, with the deployment of an RCM service, the overall healthcare industry is expected to witness a smooth transition from service-based to value-based payment models. Furthermore, the rising costs and administrative expenses in the evolving regulatory environment have fueled the increased usage of the RCM outsourced service and made it an attractive proposition for healthcare providers.
According to a senior analyst at Technavio for ITO and BPO, “The market has been continuously evolving with technological advances, and an RCM solution provides both operational and cost reduction advantage. In the current data-driven economy, it is continually being recognized as a tool for competitive advantage. A healthcare RCM solution contributes to revenue growth, compliance and overall improvement in organizational transparency. Therefore, all these factors expand the end-user base and drive the consumption of healthcare RCM outsourcing market in the US.”
Pension Plan Sponsors Should Look Beyond the Headlines on the Latest U.S. Life Expectancy Data, According to The Segal Group
Source: Kenneth D. Kochanek, M.A., Sherry L. Murphy, B.S., Jiaquan Xu, M.D. and Elizabeth Arias, Ph.D. "Mortality in the United States, 2016." NCHS Data Brief No. 293 (December 2017) (Graphic: Business Wire)
The latest federal government report from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) shows that life expectancy at birth declined for the second consecutive year. Because shorter life expectancy translates into reduced costs for pension plans, it can be tempting to conclude the latest data is good news for pension plan costs.
However, pension plan sponsors should look beyond the headlines, as life expectancy continues to improve for retirement-age Americans.
“Recent mortality rates observed for the older population continue to support expected improvements in projected life expectancy for this age group, which drives pension costs,” said Eli Greenblum, Chief Actuary for The Segal Group. “It is important for actuaries for all types of pension plans, including those who work with multiemployer and public sector plans, not to reverse expectations for mortality improvement in response to the latest data.”
According to the NCHS, between 2015 and 2016, death rates increased significantly for the under-45 age groups studied. In contrast, death rates decreased for the post-65 retirement-age groups.
A subsequent analysis by the Society of Actuaries confirmed the overall age-adjusted mortality rate in the U.S. actually decreased (improved) based on the new data.
“It is important to note that experience since 2009 indicates much lower rates of mortality improvement, compared to the first decade of the century,” added Jeff Litwin, The Segal Group’s Corporate Research Actuary. “As additional experience emerges, there may be refinements necessary in actuaries’ assumptions for pension plans, but they should be based on longer-term trends. We should be cautious about setting long-term assumptions based on shorter-term trends, even when those trends last a decade.”
For more information about the latest longevity data and the implications for pension plans, or to speak with Mr. Greenblum or Mr. Litwin, please contact Todd Kohlhepp.
New Local Funeral Plan From Assure for Life Exceeds Many Final Expense Policies While Being Easier to Qualify For
Assure For Life recently introduced their new Funeral Plan to the United States, making it possible to cover up to seven people for only $50-75 a month.
With Assure's best funeral plan on the rise, more and more consumers are being introduced to a new idea with a different aspect than life insurance. While many know it's a good idea to get life insurance sooner rather than later, it's still an investment that's usually sought for when its "too late". There are alternatives to passing the qualifications for Final Expense Life Insurance, but those alternatives (such as not having to take a medical exam or give blood work) usually come with a heftier price sticker. Assure For Life's new policy gives a great balance between affordability and acceptance, allowing a lot of consumers to opt for something cheaper while getting much more coverage. Assure's new plan makes the question of Life Insurance Vs Funeral Plan a clear winning choice for many.
People can typically find themselves getting lost in all the rules and hidden fees of a life insurance policy. On the other hand, Assure's Family Protection Plan keeps it very simple and inviting. Before covering the plan, let's note that a typical 64-year old that's healthy would pay $50/month for a $10,000 Final Expense plan. This is if they pass all of the complex qualifications for the life insurance plan. With Assure's Family Protection Plan, burial expenses are covered for just $15-25 a month (depending on your state of residency). What makes Assure for Life's plan stand out, is that up to 7 members can be covered by the plan for just $50-75 a month.
Assure's Family Protection Plan covers everything from funeral services, cremation services, air ticket (round trip) from the United States for the policy owner to attend a funeral, transfer of the deceased to the local funeral home, cemetery or crematorium, and much more.
While policyholders aren't paying for a lump sum of cash that would be received at their policy's end, burial costs continuously rise and leave the typical final expense beneficiary with nothing left. Money can also be saved monthly with the low cost of this new plan by Assure For Life. To find ways to invest in your future, visit AssureForLife.com and find more details on a Local Funeral Plan.
Vivametrica Signs With Global Reinsurer SCOR to Change the Insurance Game
Insurance is in many ways a conservative industry that is generally slow to adopt change. However, the pace of adaptation has accelerated recently with innovations in technology and the introduction of insuretechs into the space. Some insurers are leveraging these advances to change the way they do business. Through innovation and willingness to adapt, global reinsurer SCOR, which operates in 160 countries and is the 4th largest in the world, is at the forefront of this paradigm shift in insurance.
“Our partnership with SCOR Global Life proves that new synergies and collaborations are the way of the future for insurance. We are proud to be on this journey with SCOR,” said Dr. Rick Hu, CEO of Vivametrica.
As announced by SCOR last week, Vivametrica has signed an agreement to co-develop a novel underwriting and risk assessment model that uses physical activity data to determine the “biological age” of individuals. This technology draws on Vivametrica expertise, clinical research studies, and insurer validated investigations linking physical activity to mortality, and disease risk. Leveraging the power of smartphones and wearable sensors to continuously collect user information, this new model has the potential to change the client-insurer relationship, as well as provide new approaches to underwriting.
This Biological Age Model combines SCOR’s extensive knowledge and experience in insurance with the powerful analytics developed by Vivametrica using their one-of-a-kind population database. This has the potential to expedite the application process, allow access to new markets of scale, and engage clients in personal wellness.
“This partnership between Vivametrica and SCOR represents a fundamental shift in the way insurers will leverage technology, wearables, and predictive analytics. By combining Vivametrica’s deep knowledge in health, physical activity, and analytics with SCOR’s industry leadership and innovative drive, we bring the Biological Age Model that has the potential to change underwriting forever. The industry only benefits from such great partnerships between incumbents and Insuretech start-ups,” said Dr. Christy Lane, Co-CEO of Vivametrica.

Statement by Danièle Nouy, chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB
When creating the SSM framework, EU Member States chose to keep the responsibility for combatting money laundering at the national level.
Breaches of anti-money laundering can be symptomatic of more deeply rooted governance deficiencies within a bank but the ECB does not have the investigative powers to uncover such deficiencies. This is the task of national anti-money laundering authorities. Only when such breaches have been established by the relevant national authority can the ECB take these facts into consideration for the purposes of its own tasks.
