Millennials are slowly finding their economic footing but uncertain of future progress, Prudential study finds

Millennials don’t share the confidence of baby boomers and Gen Xers who believe they’ll be financially better off than their parents, according to a study commissioned by Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE: PRU).
Nearly nine in 10 millennials (88 percent) say people now in their 20s and 30s will need to work much longer than previous generations did to retire with the same level of financial security. Even if they do work for a longer period, 79 percent believe that by the time they reach 80 years old, comfortable retirement will be a thing of the past. At least 70 percent say that’s because it’s impossible to save as much money each year as prescribed by current retirement planning tools.
Prudential’s 80-Year-Old Millennial study, conducted in partnership with Kantar Consulting, combined expert interviews, a moderated online bulletin board and a quantitative survey of more than 1,000 millennials to learn how the largest generation in the U.S. workforce today envisions progress over the next 50 years. The study focused on millennials’ feelings about workplace trends, economic opportunity, technological advances and maintaining health.
“Millennials are at an important crossroads, having experienced some of the most significant economic booms in history, but also the Great Recession,” said Vishal Jain, Prudential’s Workplace Solutions Group financial wellness officer. “It’s incumbent on financial services companies—and any company that seeks to meet the financial and personal wellness needs of these constituents—to understand the changes that are driving behaviors within this generation.”
Prudential continues to capture data on how millennials envision progress over the next 50 years. Share and compare your views at 80yearoldmillennial.pru.
The Evolving Workplace
Millennials are at the center of changes being driven by technology and the employee/employer social contract. Many entered the workforce during the economic downturn and struggled to launch their careers. They have approached work with a spirit of experimentation over stability. The old assumptions about education, work and retirement no longer apply for themselves and their children.
Almost two-thirds of respondents agree that in the future “traditional full-time employment will largely disappear and freelancers will make up 75 percent or more of the U.S. workforce.” Those surveyed agreed with Prudential’s “Gig Workers in America: Profiles, Mindsets and Financial Wellness” report, which found the emerging gig economy provides creative ways to work, but creates instability regarding financial wellness.
Most millennials (72 percent) report being nervous that employers will stop providing healthcare and retirement benefits, such as 401(k) programs, with women (76 percent) and parents (76 percent) reporting slightly higher-than-average nervousness. One-third say they are “extremely” nervous that employer-provided healthcare and retirement benefits will disappear.
Nearly two-thirds of millennials are extremely or somewhat nervous that people will need to learn to work with and adapt to robots and artificial intelligence to do their jobs.
Future of Finance
Millennials are slowly finding their economic footing. They are entering the next phase in their lives and increasingly focused on career and family. They are planning a financial future in an economy that has rebounded from the Great Recession—but see a world that feels more volatile, uncertain and complex than ever before.
68 percent of millennials think it is somewhat or highly likely that investments will become completely automated, based on personal data and preferences. Though 58 percent prefer receiving financial advice from a licensed professional.
Most millennials (63 percent) reported being extremely/somewhat nervous that they are heading in a direction in which wealth will be calculated based on one’s personal data, digital possessions, and other forms of value—not just money and “traditional investments.” And 71 percent say it’s likely that the next generation will live in a world without cash.
77 percent of millennials think it’s likely that there will be a global recession in their lifetime that will be more disruptive than the Great Recession.
Tech Forward
As millennials age, they carry with them the “tech first” mentality to solving life’s problems both big and small. Having benefited from a proliferation of technology solutions—from apps to websites to wearables—millennials expect the world to continue making life easier and more connected.
Millennials are beginning to recognize that, even though they were the original digital natives, 75 percent say “people will struggle to learn and adapt to the digital tools and technologies that generations that came after them take for granted.”
68 percent fully expect the next generation to develop emotional relationships with the robots that serve them. Nevertheless, millennials believe that society will increasingly place value on personal face-to-face interactions even as the world becomes more digitally dominated.
Augmented Wellness
The rise of quantified and preventive health allows millennials more transparency and control over their bodies, but fully integrated holistic healthcare solutions and services for the body, mind, and spirit remain niche. The multiple benefits of a holistic approach to health and wellness, including a link to financial wellness, are only now being understood by mainstream healthcare institutions.
Instead of having to make a self-diagnosis and then schedule an appointment, millennials will expect healthcare providers to keep pace with other services that reduce consumers’ responsibilities by using technology, such as implanted chips or wearable devices to diagnose potential ailments and genomics to personalize medicine. While a majority believe medical visits will be virtual, over 40 percent of millennials still believe that medical visits will have to take place in person.
77 percent expect healthcare to become primarily focused on preventive and predictive services to keep people healthy, rather than reacting to treatment when people get sick.
73 percent say it is likely that their possessions will be digitally connected and synced—leading to personalized services by the time they retire. They also believe that insuring data will be as important as insuring life by this point.
Millennials say:
“Since I was in middle school I have been told that by the time I reach 65, Social Security will be depleted for our use. It’s something that I have continued to hear even into this most recent election. I’ve just accepted it as truth.” – Tiarra A., age 26, Kentucky.
“The issue is not the inability to plan, it is the inability to save. Houses are expensive, kids are expensive, and currently I don’t even have enough money to send one kid to just one semester of college. Saving money for retirement just isn’t a luxury that anyone has.” – Ben T., age 25, Illinois.
“A successful work life would be with a company that understands work-life balance and employee reinvestment. I’d feel great working for a company that is willing to invest in my education/future and give me the ability to spend time with my family.” – Shawn W., age 26, New York.

FINEOS announces new Webinar: ‘Snail Mail in the Digital Era – Why Insurers Need to Kick the Paper Habit’
Focusing on how Life and Health insurers can make the leap from paper to electronic communications
FINEOS Corporation, the market-leading provider of core systems for Life, Accident and Health insurance continues its best practice webinar series with “Snail Mail in the Digital Era: Why Insurers Need to Kick the Paper Habit”. The webinar takes place on March 27, 2018 and will be presented by Jonathan Boylan, Chief Technology Officer, FINEOS. The event is hosted by Digital Insurance and registrations can be made by clicking here.
The objective of the session is to help Life and Health insurers understand and better meet their customers’ needs for electroniccommunications. In 2017, 77% of US adults used smartphones, 51% had tablets, 76% used email and 91% used the internet. We now fly without paper tickets, check out of hotels without paper bills, and receive our bank statements and utility bills online. Yet insurers like nothing better than sending mail; packages of information printed on paper, carried across the country by people in trucks. Despite their best intentions, when it comes to going paperless, many insurers are challenged by tradition, regulatory requirements and outdated systems.
In the 45-minute webinar, Jonathan Boylan will look at leaders who have successfully evolved, graduating from paper to electronic communications in order to give the customer what they want. He will discuss how some insurers are kicking the paper habit, deploying digital technology, and using digital service to win new business. Investment in Insurtech Industry Surged in 2017, with Europe Emerging as Key Insurtech Hub, Accenture Analysis Finds
But consumers won’t experience benefits of technology until insurers rethink their innovation strategy
Number of insurtech deals by region (Graphic: Business Wire)
March 22, 2018 12:59 AM Eastern Daylight Time
Global investment in the insurance technology (insurtech) industry surged in 2017, with Europe emerging as a new insurtech hub outside the U.S., according to new research from Accenture (NYSE: ACN).
The research, which includes new analysis of CB Insights data on insurtech deals over the last year, appears in a new Accenture report titled “Fearless Innovation: Insurtech as the Catalyst for Change Within Insurance.”
According to the report, the number of insurtech deals increased 39 percent globally in 2017, with the total value of deals up 32 percent, to US$2.3 billion.
While North America still leads in terms of both the total value and number of deals – accounting for US$1.24 billion, or 46 percent of deals last year – the number of deals there grew only 6 percent in 2017. In Europe, however, the number of deals increased 118 percent, accounting for one-third of all insurtech deals globally, and the total value of deals there jumped an astounding 385 percent, to US$679 million. Asia-Pacific saw a significant increase in funding, with a 169 percent rise in deal values, to US$358 million, with the number of deals rising 27 percent.
Despite the uncertainty around the U.K.’s vote to leave the European Union, the nation continues its emergence as Europe’s insurtech capital, with 41 deals in 2017, representing total growth of 117 percent over the last two years. Deal values vastly increased in 2017, with US$364 million invested in UK-based insurtechs, up from US$19 million the year before.
The report argues that insurtech should serve as a catalyst for innovation across the insurance industry, but traditional insurers must recognize that collaborating with insurtech startups is just one part of this process. Ultimately, innovation needs to become engrained throughout their organizations.
“The insurtech industry’s rapid growth reflects investors’ response to consumer appetite for change in an industry sitting on trapped value,” said Roy Jubraj, Accenture's UK and Ireland Insurance Strategy and Innovation lead. “At the same time, however, insurers must recognize that insurtech investments alone can’t deliver the levels of change and innovation the industry requires or that its customers expect. The key is having an enterprise-wide innovation strategy that transforms the core business and enables the company to drive growth.”
The research reveals that property and casualty was the most popular insurance segment for insurtech investments in 2017, accounting for 42 percent of global investments, with multiline (26 percent) and health (18 percent) rounding out the top three. Personal lines accounted for more than two-thirds (68 percent) of insurtech investments, with commercial lines and mixed applications accounting for 26 percent and 6 percent, respectively.
From a value chain perspective, marketing and distribution led all areas in terms of insurtech investment, accounting for more than half (53 percent) of deals globally. This is evident in the number of startups pitching slick, app-based sales and distribution experiences, as well as those improving the customer claims journey through mobile photo-evidencing or chatbot First Notification of Loss.
The report reveals that traditional insurers are quickly getting behind emerging technology companies, as the percentage of traditional insurers’ participating in venture capital investments is up 63 percent over the last five years. The most common areas for these investments were health and digital health (14 percent of such investments), the internet of things (13 percent), and big data and analytics (9 percent).
“Insurtech is no longer just a target for private equity and venture capital — it’s a global phenomenon,” said Michael Costonis, who leads Accenture’s Insurance practice globally. “Insurers are playing a big role in helping reshape the technology landscape across the industry, making investments beyond wearables and telematics to seize the opportunity that exists within distribution to strengthen the customer experience. The next step for insurers is to use insurtech as a springboard to innovate across their entire organization. After all, $2.3 billion is a small slice of the pie when you consider that insurance is a $4.2 trillion industry.”
Methodology
Accenture analyzed insurtech investment data from CB Insights, a global venture-finance data and analytics firm. The analysis included global financing activity from venture-capital and private-equity firms, corporations and corporate venture-capital divisions, hedge funds, accelerators, and government-backed funds. The investment data ranged from 2010 through 2017 and included equity and non-equity financing.
ONE20 Announces Exclusive MDLIVE Offering, Launches Insurance Marketplace for Members
Access to affordable health care on the road is one of the trucking industry’s biggest challenges today. That’s why the nation’s largest free membership for professional truck drivers – ONE20 – is teaming up with MDLIVE to give members access to affordable virtual health care.
The ONE20 MDLIVE Program provides more benefits to drivers than any other virtual health plan.
$9.95 monthly subscription with unlimited use (normally $59 per visit)
No waiting period for ONE20 Members – use MDLIVE immediately
No co-pays, deductibles or messy insurance claims
Unlimited use for ONE20 members and primary family members – no extra costs to add dependents
Easy prescriptions or refills at 60,000 pharmacies
Convenient care on the road when drivers need it most – 24/7/365
“Professional drivers live, work and play on the road, so health care solutions that don’t offer flexibility are a huge hassle and impact a driver’s ability to earn an income,” said ONE20 founder and CEO Christian Schenk. “With ONE20’s new MDLIVE offering, drivers can now access the quality care they need, at prices they can afford, without ever having to disrupt their schedules.”
The exclusive program was developed specifically for truck drivers. Upon sign up, ONE20 members will be able to access board-certified physicians around the clock, with no copays or hidden charges. The program also includes a prescription drug card, enabling refills at more than 60,000 pharmacies. Drivers who sign up get unlimited doctors’ visits by telephone, email, web chat or secure video. This program sets a new “gold standard” for health care affordability and flexibility for America’s hard-working truckers.
ONE20 Health Insurance Marketplace
In addition to virtual health care, ONE20 members will also be able to purchase health insurance plans through the ONE20 Insurance Marketplace, which will offer medical, dental, vision, life, prescription drug discount cards and occupational/accidental coverage. ONE20 members can browse and select from a variety of different plans – varying by state – with competitive rates, valuable benefits and flexible coverage options.
“Our business exists for the sole reason of helping the American trucker. We’re going to continue to develop and deliver new, valuable benefits and make them available to our members,” Schenk said. “For years, we’ve heard from drivers that access to affordable health care is among their greatest concerns. We’re now addressing that challenge head-on and giving drivers more flexible, cost-effective options.”

Rise of the Robots Brings Benefits But Creates New Loss and Liability Scenarios for Businesses
New Allianz AI Report Reveals Potential for Large Scale Disruptions as Economies Become More Interconnected
In the new report The Rise of Artificial Intelligence: Future Outlook and Emerging Risks, Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) identifies both the benefits and emerging risk concerns around the growing implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in society and industry, including the insurance sector.
“AI comes with potential benefits and risks in many areas: economic, political, mobility, healthcare, defense and the environment. Active risk management strategies will be needed to maximize the net benefits of a full introduction of advanced AI applications into society,” says Michael Bruch, Head of Emerging Trends at AGCS.
Today, “weak” or basic forms of AI are able to perform specific tasks, but future generations of “strong” AI applications will be capable of solving difficult problems and executing complex transactions. AI is finding users in almost every industry - from chatbots that offer financial advice to helping doctors diagnose cancer.
Better weather prediction, financial transfers and oversight of industrial machinery also fall into the AI scope. According to Accenture, AI could double the annual economic growth rate in 12 developed economies by 20351.
With these potential benefits, however, come risks. Cyber attacks, which are one of the biggest threats to businesses according to the Allianz Risk Barometer 2018, illustrate the contradictory benefits of new technologies such as AI: For instance, AI-powered software could help reduce cyber risk for companies by better detecting attacks, but could also increase risk if malicious hackers are able to take control of systems, machines or vehicles.
Furthermore, AI could enable more serious and targeted cyber incidents to occur by lowering the cost of devising attacks. The same hacker attack – or programming error – for example, could be replicated on numerous machines. It is already estimated that a major global cyber-attack has the potential to trigger losses in excess of $50 billion2, but even a half-day outage at a cloud service provider has the potential to generate losses around $850 million3.
Emerging AI risks
To identify emerging AI risks, AGCS has focused on five areas of concern: software accessibility, safety, accountability, liability and ethics. “By addressing each of these areas, responsible development and introduction of AI becomes less hazardous for society. Preventive measures that reduce risks from unintended consequences are essential,” Bruch says.
In terms of safety, the race for bringing AI systems to market could lead to insufficient or negligent validation activities, which are necessary to guarantee the deployment of safe and functional AI agents. This, in turn, could lead to an increase in defective products and recalls.
AI agents may take over many decisions from humans in the future, but they cannot legally be held liable for those decisions. In general, the manufacturer or software programmer of an AI agent is liable for defects that cause damages to users. However, AI decisions that are not directly related to design or manufacturing, but are taken by an AI agent because of its interpretation of reality, would have no explicit liable party, according to current law.
“Leaving the decisions to courts may be expensive and inefficient if the number of AI-generated damages start increasing,” Bruch says. “A solution to the lack of legal lability would be to establish expert agencies or authorities to develop a liability framework under which designers, manufacturers or sellers of AI products would be subject to limited tort liability.”
Insurers will have a crucial role to play in helping to minimize, manage and transfer emerging risks from AI applications. Traditional coverages will need to be adapted to protect consumers and businesses alike. Insurance will need to better address certain exposures to businesses such as cyber-attacks, business interruption, product recall and reputational damage. New liability insurance models will likely be adopted – in areas such as autonomous driving– increasing the pressure on manufacturers and software vendors and decreasing the strict liability of consumers.
Insurers are early AI adopters
The insurance industry has been an early adopter of machine learning as it handles and involves lots of data and repetitive processes. “There is huge potential for AI to improve the insurance value chain. Initially, it will help automate insurance processes to enable better delivery to our customers. Policies can be issued, and claims processed, faster and more efficiently,” Bruch explains.
By boosting data analytics, AI will also provide insurers and their customers with a much better understanding of their risks so that they can be more effectively reduced, while allowing for the development of new and improved insurance solutions. AI-powered analytics could also help companies better understand cyber risks and enhance security. At the same time, the technology could assist insurers in identifying accumulations of cyber exposure. Overall, AI will change the way insurers interact with their customers, enabling 24/7 service.
